What is Accessibility?

What is Accessibility?

Accessibility, or to be accessible, means that content created is made so that it can be used and accessed by as many people as possible. Having something be accessible means that everybody is able to interface with it. It can be something as simple as having a ramp next to a set of steps into a building for those who are wheelchair bound, or something more complex like tactile surfaces on city pathways for those who require a mobility cane.

Accessibility makes it easier for people who require aid to be able to live their lives more independently.

What is Accessibility Software?

Accessibility software works in the same way, allowing content to be interacted with in different ways than initially conceived. In this way, everybody can interface with computers and websites. A few examples of Accessibility Software are screen readers, screen magnifiers, and braille displays.

What are Accessibility Features?

Accessibility Features are features that a developer adds to a website in order to integrate with Accessibility Software. This way a screen reader, for example, will be able to read and narrate what is on the page easier for the user. Some examples include, closed captioning or live subtitles, alt text for images, high contrast toggles, and text resizing.
